How long the certificate lasts
The exam is done in a single visit. A standard certificate is valid for 2 years; if you have controlled high blood pressure or diabetes without insulin, the medical team may issue it for 1 year. We recommend renewing at least 2 weeks before it expires so you don't lose work days. If your employer also requires a drug and alcohol test, we can do it in the same visit.

Up to two years, but the examiner can issue a shorter card when a condition such as high blood pressure or diabetes needs closer follow-up. Note the expiration date and come in a few weeks early, because driving a commercial vehicle with an expired medical card can put your CDL status at risk.
It helps a lot. Bring recent notes from the provider who treats you, and your CPAP usage report if you use one, so the examiner can see the condition is well managed. Without that paperwork, the exam may end with a request for more information instead of a card, which means a second trip.
The vision check measures how sharply you see with each eye and both together, your side vision, and whether you can tell apart the red, green and amber of traffic signals. Hearing is tested with a forced whisper at a set distance or with an audiometer. Wear the same glasses, contacts or hearing aid you rely on behind the wheel.
