Frequently Asked Questions

An abscess is usually a red, warm, tender lump that feels firm at first and softer as pus collects, sometimes with a white or yellow head. A pimple is smaller and stays on the surface. If the bump keeps growing, hurts more each day or comes with fever, have it examined.

The cavity may be lightly packed with gauze or left to drain, then covered with a dressing. You'll get instructions for warm compresses and dressing changes, and you may be asked to come back so the packing can be removed and healing checked. Some drainage over the following days is expected.

Many bumps people blame on spider bites turn out to be skin infections, often caused by staph bacteria, that form an abscess. That's why a painful, swelling bite deserves an exam instead of home treatment. If pus has collected under the skin, draining it is usually what brings relief and lets the infection clear.
