Frequently Asked Questions

The area is numbed with a local anesthetic first, so the sting you feel comes mostly from that injection. Once it works, you may notice tugging or pressure while the wound is cleaned and closed, but not sharp pain. The numbness wears off over the next few hours, and over-the-counter pain relievers are usually enough.

Brief showers are usually fine once the first day has passed, as long as you pat the area dry afterward. Don't soak the wound in a bath, pool or hot tub until the stitches are out, and skip ointments or home remedies you weren't told to use. Swimming on a hot Houston weekend can wait.

If your last tetanus booster was more than five years ago and the cut was dirty, or you can't remember when you had it, the medical team will likely recommend one. It can be given at the same visit through our [vaccine service](/services/vacunas), so there's no need for a separate trip.
