Frequently Asked Questions

Clues include fever, red tonsils with white patches, swollen neck glands and painful swallowing, often without a cough or runny nose. It's very common in school-age kids. A cough, hoarse voice and stuffy nose point more toward a virus, but the throat swab is how you know for sure.

It's better to skip mouthwash and throat lozenges right before, since they can interfere with the sample. A fever reducer is fine; just tell us which one your child took and when. The swab brushes the back of the throat quickly and may cause a brief gag, nothing more.

A negative rapid test makes strep less likely, though in kids and teens it's sometimes confirmed with a throat culture. The medical team also considers viruses like flu, COVID or mono. Come back if you can't swallow liquids, are drooling or the fever won't come down, and see our [respiratory illness care](/services/enfermedades-respiratorias).
