How is the thyroid checked?
With a blood test. TSH is the main test; free T4 and T3 complete the panel, and antibodies help identify conditions such as Hashimoto's or Graves' disease. No fasting is needed: we draw the sample on the spot, walk-in and without a doctor's order, and let you know when the result is ready. Thyroid evaluation is also part of our Women's Hormone Panel package.
Treatment and follow-up
Hypothyroidism is treated with levothyroxine, a daily pill taken on an empty stomach. When starting or changing the dose, TSH is checked after 6 to 8 weeks until the right dose is found; after that a check every 6 to 12 months is enough. For hyperthyroidism the medical team prescribes antithyroid medication and, when needed, guides your referral to endocrinology. If treatment is prescribed, we send it electronically to the pharmacy you choose.

It can be. The medical team asks about other clues such as feeling cold, dry skin, hair loss, constipation or irregular periods, feels your neck for swelling, and orders a TSH and free T4 blood test. You don't need an order from another provider to get the test done at the clinic.
Most people come in before their morning pill, bring it along and take it right after the sample is drawn. Let us know if you use biotin or hair and nail supplements, since they can throw off some thyroid readings. Your result tells the medical team whether to keep the same dose or change it.
Not always. A borderline number is weighed against your symptoms, your age, a pregnancy or plans to get pregnant, and sometimes thyroid antibodies. The medical team may suggest repeating the test later, start treatment, or help you get a referral if something else shows up, such as a lump in your neck that needs a closer look.
